Everybody loves youtube don´t they? Adding a Youtube video to WordPress could not be easier and makes for a valuable way of communication information in a much more capivating and interesting format than paragraphs and paragraphs of text and a smattering of images, but of course it all depends on the quality of the video to begin with.
I have used quite a few videos embedded in my posts from Yoube throughout my blog, but for the beginner I thought I would fill you in, step by step, on how to add a YouTube video to a post or page.
Before that though you should be aware of what Youtube can offer in advance.
Visit www.youtube.com. Now before you go any further check which region of youtube.com you are looking at. Dead easy. At the top of the page, slightly to the right of the logo are two words, in this case:
Worldwide (All) | English
Heres a quick pic to show you what I mean.
Selecting the word Worldwide will allow you to choose the regional version of youtube as each country has a different results criteria when searches are done, but even if you changed the video to Spain for example, all the instructions will remain in English unless, yep you guessed it, you click on the word English and choose a different language.
The next thing to realise is the code and customisation videos available to you with youtube itself. Search for a video you want, something like: Web Design
and I choose this as the result: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAMjjTFXz5Y
(This video is actually pretty informative so I have added it in this post as well).
Now on the right hand side of the screen about half way down you will see a grey box with relevant information about the video, the author and post date etc. The part we are interested in firstly is this little sun/flower button beside the “embed” bar, highlighted here.
Clicking this will present you with a range of editing options for the viewer that allow you to change the border colour of the video.
Its a pretty simple interface and dosent allow for alot of control but we like simple as its … well its simple isn’t it. Make your selection and click the close button.
Now just copy and paste the full line (make sure you have the full line!) of code in the embed bar:
And now we can add the Youtube video to your WordPress blog.
Adding a youtube.com video the simple way.
Open your post.
In the WordPress text editor choose the tab on the right side of the window here:
Now just paste the line of code intothe window and go back to “VISUAL” mode. TA DA! A new youtube video has been added to your post or page. Dont worry if its not playing though, it will initially look something like this until you publish the page or post:
And heres the video embedded:
Now say for example you wanted to make the dimensions of the video change? Pretty simple stuff. Select the HTML tab again and locate the code you copied from Youtube.com. It will look something like this.
<object classid=”clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000″ width=”425″ height=”344″ codebase=”http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/
cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0″><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true” /><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always” /><param name=”src” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/NAMjjTFXz5Y&hl=en&fs=1″ /><embed type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”425″ height=”344″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/NAMjjTFXz5Y&hl=en&fs=1″ allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true”></embed></object>
Now all this information may seem to be a drunk man’s idea of a love letter, but most of it isn’t relevant to me or you at all and SHOULD NOT BE CHANGED. The only bit you may want to edit is highlighted in red text above so you can mess around with the video dimensions to make it “fit” into your blog writing area.
This is the simplest method of adding a youtube video to a blog by the way but its not necessarily ideal. There are various plugins available for wordpress that you can upload and install (if you don’t know to add a plugin check this post: How to install a Plugin for WordPress for a full step by step guide). These Youtube plugins offer a much greater scope of options and functions than the brutally simple method discribed above and the point is to check them out and have fun with the options.
Here are a few of the most popular Youtube WordPress plugins to get you started.
A quick Google search for something like “youtube wordpress plugins” or such will bring back more results.
Hope you find this all usefull!
